World Tulip Summit

The 2008 World Tulip Summit and the Tulipmania Festival from Mid April to Mid May will bring visitors to Spalding and South Holland from all over the world.

The 2008 World Tulip Summit will include international speakers on the latest developments in the science and technology of tulips, tulip art and floral photography, tulips for tourism, floral pageants and parades, tulips and the world’s famous gardens and the history of the discovery of the tulip. The full speaker programme will be announced in due course.

One of the highlights of the festival will be the 50th Spalding Flower Parade on May 3rd.

A Tour de Fens cycle race, yacht racing on the Wash, hot air balloons and open air theatre in Ayscoughfee gardens are some of the events being planned for the six weeks of the 2008 Tulipmania Festival.

Highlights include:

  • The 50th Spalding Flower Parade on May 3rd.
    The theme is “Thanks For The Memories”
  • The World Tulip Summit May 1st to May 2nd.
  • South Lincolnshire and the Fens Tulipmania Festival. Mid April to Mid May.
  • Tulip Highways. The planting of one million tulips is planned.
  • Tulip Walks and Tulip Cycle Rides
  • Music and Arts events.
    Specially commissioned programmes linking in with existing calendar events including outdoor theatre performances and Cathedral concerts
  • Sports and leisure events are planned for the duration of the Tulipmania festival. Many of these are still in the planning stages..

Highlights centred on Spalding and the 50th Tulip Parade include a Flower Queens Reunion Ball at The South Holland Centre, Exhibitions at Ayscoughfee Hall and The Bulb Museum celebrating 50 years of South Holland History, and a Grand Finale Fireworks and Music Night at Springfields Festival Gardens.

In addition to the above it is expected that pubs, cafes and restaurants will offer special ‘TulipMania’ menus and civic and corporate buildings will join in the celebrations by planting out their own tulip displays.
